The oil refining process begins with crude oil, containing a myriad mixture of mostly hydrocarbon chemicals, and proceeds to a final array of separated, more purified end products. The process requires a complex sequence of steps for most of the products and involves many types of equipment. The diagram shown above is a simplified schematic, showing the basic steps in refining, used by most oil refineries.
